HOUSEHOLD GOODS AND PERSONAL EFFECTS

Required Documents:  1) Original Bill of Lading 2) Passports for entire family 3) List of articles with value and date purchased against each (4) One year Visa to reside in India
Customs Regulations: Duty-free import permitted by foreign nationals/Indians transferring residence to India. If Indian citizen, must have resided outside of country for 2 years and should now stay in country for 1 year. Foreign nationals required to produce visa for 1 year. Household goods must be custom cleared at the first port of discharge, unless arrangements have been made to send the goods to an inland destination under customs bond. Bonding formalities are lengthy and costly.

Remarks: Following items will be dutiable at 25%, whether new or used, subject to condition that only one of each item is allowed and total value of all does not exceed Indian Rupees 150,000 (approx US $5000): TV, VCR, washing machine, LPG cooking range, dishwasher, music system, personal computer, air conditioner, refrigerator, deep freezer, microwave oven, video camera, word processing machine, FAX Machine. Duty has to be paid on these articles even if they are used more than one year. All other items will be duty-free if in owner’s possession and use for 1 year. All new articles, whether furniture, crockery, mixers, etc., are charged duty of 100%.

VEHICLES

Required Documents:  1) Original Bill of Lading 2) Owner’s passport indicating two years residence abroad 3) Manufacturer’s invoice 4) Car registration certificates 5) Insurance policy 6) Keys 7) List of articles and purchase date.
Customs Regulations: Prior to customs clearance, foreign nationals are required to furnish a bank bond for import trade control authorities, undertaking not to sell the car for a specified period. Indians, however, can sell the car immediately upon clearance. Current duty on vehicles is approximately 131%. Returning Indians can import brand new cars up to 1600 cc. Cars exceeding 1600 cc must have been registered in the importers name abroad for at least one year.

RemarksALL INDIAN CUSTOMS REGULATIONS ARE CURRENTLY BEING REVISED. PLEASE CHECK WITH YOUR INDIA AGENT FOR THE CURRENT REQUIREMENTS. Due to heavy monsoons from July through October, be sure containers/liftvans are properly waterproofed. Items used by persons with a Post Graduate Degree or equivalent are allowed to import duty- free, and up to RS 60,000 of equipment used in their professions.
