Customs Regulations: Used household goods pay duties. Only personal effects (travel articles) and few items (like used books) are duty exempt. A special discount is granted for usage if goods have been in owner’s possession and out of the country for at least 6 months. Highest discount is given when this time period is over 3 years.

Remarks: Many Consulate’s employees have the practice of saying that a Certificate of Usage is not needed. Insist. And if they don’t have the form, ask Agent in Vzla. for it; and have it stamped. Demurrage charges are very high; and the mail system is not the best. Therefore, documents (original OBL) for ocean shipments with transit time of less than 3 weeks, should be sent by courier.
